Some advanced cancer patients suffer from pungent sulfury malodor. To determine the chemical identity of the odorant, we performed gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-olfactometry analysis of volatiles from fungating cancer wounds. We identified the source of the characteristic smell as dimethyl trisulfide, a compound that is known to be emitted from some vegetables and microorganisms. Controlling the production of dimethyl trisulfide should improve quality of life of patients.  相似文献

Most empirical and theoretical papers on prey–predator interactions are for animals with long-range detection, animals that can detect and react to predators long before these touch the prey. Heavy-bodied and chemically defended harvestmen (Arachnida, Opiliones) are an exception to this general pattern and rely on contact to detect arthropod predators. We examined the interactions between the Brazilian wandering spider Ctenus ornatus with harvestmen (Mischonyx cuspidatus) or control prey (Gryllus sp. and M. cuspidatus immature, both with soft integuments). Considering a prey–predator system in which fleeing from or reacting to a predator at a distance is not possible, we predicted both a high survival value of near-range defense mechanisms and that mortality would be higher in the absence of such defense mechanisms. We also expected the predator to behave differently when interacting with harvestmen or with a control prey without such defense mechanisms. Our results from laboratory experiments partially matched our predictions: First of all, histological sections showed that the integument of adult harvestmen is thicker than that of immature harvestmen and that of crickets. Adult harvestmen were less preyed upon than the control prey; the heavy armature increases the survival rate but the secretions from the scent glands do not. The predator did behave differently when attacking harvestmen compared to crickets. Despite the large size difference between predator and harvestmen, the protection provided by the armature allowed some of the harvestmen to survive encounters without pre-contact detection, thus greatly reducing the reliance on long-range detection to survive encounters with predators. Harvestmen call for theoretical and empirical work on prey–predator interactions that take into account the possibility that prey may not detect the predator before contact is established.  相似文献

The titan arum, Amorphophallus titanum, is a flowering plant with the largest inflorescence in the world. The flower emits a unique rotting animal-like odor that attracts insects for pollination. To determine the chemical identity of this characteristic odor, we performed gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-olfactometry analysis of volatiles derived from the inflorescence. The main odorant causing the smell during the flower-opening phase was identified as dimethyl trisulfide, a compound with a sulfury odor that has been found to be emitted from some vegetables, microorganisms, and cancerous wounds.  相似文献

Abstract: Scent-matching dogs have previously been used to identify caged individual Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) by fecal material (scat), but this technique has not been tested in the wild. We tested the hypothesis that trained dogs can identify individual tigers by unique characteristics present in scat. To conduct this work, we used 5 dogs and 58 scats from 25 known individual tigers in independent trials. Dogs correctly selected matched test scats at an average rate of 87% (SE ± 1.4%, n = 521 trials). The average accuracy rates for 4 dogs increased to 98% (SE ± 1.6%, n = 86 sets of repeated-trials) using repeated-trial tests. Each of 5 dogs made correct choices better than expected by chance (dog 1 χ21 = 507.9, P ≤ 0.001; dog 2 χ21 = 882.1, P ≤ 0.001; dog 3 χ21 = 374.1, P ≤ 0.001; dog 4 χ21 = 379.2, P ≤ 0.001; and dog 5 χ21 = 103.9, P ≤ 0.001). Four dogs were able to match 11 scats deposited over a 4-year period from one tiger with an accuracy of 100% (n = 40 trails). This method may be a useful alternative to genetic analyses that are used in conjunction with scat-sampling schemes in studies for which DNA genotyping is impractical or ineffective. Used with mark—recapture surveys to estimate species abundance, scent-matching dogs have the potential of being important tools in the study of wild Amur tigers, as well as other wildlife species.  相似文献

We use partial differential equation models to examine the effects of cross-edge incursions by a predator on the persistence or extinction of a patch-resident prey species. Gas-phase biological processes areeffective systems for treating air contaminatedwith biodegradable compounds. The greatestamount of experience with gas-phase processesexists with odor control and sulfide oxidation.Organic contaminant concentrations are limitedby oxygen transfer and clogging to values ofapproximately 1000 ppmv and loading rates ofapproximately 20 g/m3·h with empty bed contacttimes and air flux values of approximatelyone-minute and 1 m3/m2·min, respectively.Outlet contaminant concentrations attainableare generally near the non-detect level andnearly always below 50 ppbv. Very fewcontaminant concentration profiles have beenpublished and most performance and processresponse modeling has been based on in/outcontaminant values. Based on limited pilot andlaboratory scale profile data, it appears thatmany systems treating less soluble organics maybe fully or partially mass transport limited.The principal control problem in biofilters ismoisture content. Systems should be designedwith capacity to periodically add moisture tothe bed. In systems treating sulfides orchlorinated organics acid is produced and pHcontrol and corrosion can be problems. Cloggingdue to excess microbial growth results inincreased head loss, channelization, anddecreased performance. Initial head loss isusually less than 10 mm/m but increases as runtimes become extended. Typical of plug flowbiological processes, the highest removal ratesoccur near the inlet. Transient contaminantconcentration pulses tend to result in deeperpenetration into the bed where activity islower.  相似文献

【目的】农作物间套作对害虫的影响很大程度上取决于害虫的行为反应,通过研究玉米/甘蔗套作系统中植物气味对亚洲玉米螟Ostrinia furnacalis(Guenee)行为的影响,将为利用化学生态手段防治套作田中的害虫提供依据。【方法】通过昆虫触角电位实验、成虫产卵和幼虫取食实验,测定了甘蔗、玉米植株及二氯甲烷漂洗物对亚洲玉米螟成虫产卵、幼虫取食的影响。【结果】亚洲玉米螟成虫在甘蔗植株上的落卵量(卵粒数、卵块数)与玉米植株差异不显著,取食甘蔗植株的幼虫数量显著低于玉米植株。亚洲玉米螟对甘蔗、玉米叶片漂洗物均可产生EAG反应,且在同一浓度下的反应值之间无显著差异。成虫产卵量(卵粒数、卵块数)在0.1 gE/mL浓度的甘蔗和玉米漂洗物间差异不显著;幼虫对经甘蔗叶片漂洗物处理过的饲料的相对取食率均低于65.00%,显著低于玉米漂洗物处理的饲料。【结论】甘蔗和玉米气味对亚洲玉米螟产卵的影响没有差异,但甘蔗气味会导致初孵幼虫表现出很强的逃逸行为。  相似文献
